Course Duration

 AACI expects that on average, students will have a study load of 12-14 hours per week to complete this ACM20121 Certificate II in Animal Care course that requires approximately 910 study hours over a 52 week period. 

For students spending less than 12 hours per week the weekly time commitment will be adjusted accordingly. This weekly commitment reflects a recommendation for a student new to the industry with only little prior work experience. Consequently, this weekly time commitment may change depending on previous learning, experience or an individual’s work schedule.

These payment plan options are suitable for students wanting to manage their cash flow. It’s handy if you want to get started right away, but don’t have the full amount on hand. Our weekly & monthly payment plans are flexible and available now. Payment must be made with Master Card or Visa.

This qualification covers work activities undertaken by a cross-section of animal care, retail and management enterprises such as Pet Services, assistant animal care worker, assistant animal shelter attendant, assistant kennel hand and assistant cattery attendant.

To achieve this qualification, ACM20121 Certificate II in Animal Care, competency must be demonstrated in 12 units of competency, namely 7 core units plus 5 elective units.

This qualification has the following 7 core units of competency:

  • ACMGEN201 Work in the animal care industry
  • ACMGEN202 Complete animal care hygiene routines
  • ACMGEN203 Feed and water animals
  • ACMGEN204 Assist in health care of animals
  • ACMSUS201 Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • ACMWHS201 Participate in workplace health and safety processes
  • BSBCMM211 Apply communication skills

This qualification has the following 5 set elective units of competency:

  • ACMGEN309 Provide basic animal first aid
  • ACMGEN310 Provide reception services for an animal care facility
  • ACMVET201 Assist with veterinary nursing reception duties
  • ACMSPE316 Provide general care of domestic dogs
  • ACMSPE317 Provide general care of domestic cats

The Certificate II in Animal Care course has no formal prerequisites or entry requirements. However, to ensure you get the most out of training with AACI, the following enrolment process applies:

Direct entry is available to our Certificate II in Animal Care.

You must be 18 years of age, AND

  • Applicants are expected to have literacy and numeracy skills at Year 10 or

  • Successfully complete an LLN assessment utilizing LLN robot that is equivalent to Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2 or a Certificate II qualification or higher


Once we receive your enrolment, our friendly course consultants will touch base to undertake a pre-training review to ensure the training is right for you.

For students without an equal or higher level qualification, there is a short language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) quiz you complete online.

To complete the course you will need access to a working computer with Microsoft Office, access to the internet, smart phone, video camera or web camera as required.

Am I eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL) or credit transfer (CT)?

We may be able to take into account relevant knowledge and skills you’ve gained through previous formal or informal training, education and employment. AACI has qualified Animal Care Trainers and Assessors that also currently work in the animal care industry and have vast vocational education and training.  All Trainers and Assessors have current and vast Animal Care industry experience.

AACI teaching staff are highly qualified not only from a formal qualification perspective but also from a practical experience standpoint.

Your ACM20121 Certificate II in Animal Care is a great pathway to the also leads to the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

To successfully achieve competency in this qualification, students will be required to satisfactorily complete the Assessment Tasks contained in both of the Assessment Booklets for each unit in the course.  These Tasks are referenced in the Learner Resources and detailed in our Theory Assessment Booklet and Practical Assessment Booklet that include questioning, demonstrations including Observation Checklists and Workplace practice tasks.

The practical assessment tasks for a unit shall require students to attend and/or be performed either in Animal Care facility, such as animal shelter, boarding facility, Veterinary clinic or Veterinary hospital that is registered and approved by AACI.[1]

AACI provides written assessment instructions for all theory and practical assessments.

AACI provides free to Students, Volunteer Work Experience insurance, which makes it easier to secure valuable work experience in the industry.  ACCI recommends that students enrolled in this course perform at least 100 hours of work placement in a real animal care facility.

Please note that work placements can be undertaken

  • on a be volunteer (unpaid) or a paid employment basis
  • at a veterinary clinic or veterinary hospital but need not be.

The distance course delivery mode allows students to continue to completing theory assessments in the course in the event of further COVID19 restrictions.  Our flexibility also assists in students completing practical assessment tasks in the event of COVID workplace restrictions.
